First idea for creating national league in Spain comes in 1927, but officially league started in 1929 as Primera Division with 10 clubs. The 10 teams that were selected were previous winners of the Copa del Rey.

Only three, of the founding 10 teams, have never been relegated from the La Liga. Those teams are Barcelona, Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao.

Right now is among the most popular football leagues in the world . It`s broadcast to over 100 countries. It`s very popular among gamblers and all bookies offers La Liga odds. You can read more on their website.

Format of the La Liga

There are 20 clubs in the La Liga. A season lasts from August to May, 38 matchdays. Each club have to play against each other twice during season. For each set of matches against any opponent, the rule is that you will play one match at your home stadium and one match at the stadium of the opponent.

For each match teams will receive 3 points for victory, 1 point for a draw and 0 (zero) points for losing. At the end of the season, the winner taking the title will be the team with most total points scored.

What if two or more teams have the same points at the end of the season?

In this case, a set of rules will apply to determine the winner. If two clubs have same points, then the goal difference for the two matches between those clubs (without away goals rule) will determine the final position. If there are more than two clubs with same points, we look at the games the clubs have played against each other and we compare head-to-head points, head-to-head goal difference, total goal difference and total goals scored.

Promotion and relegation

A system of promotion and relegation exists between the Primera Division and the Segunda. (Second level in the Spanish football). The three lowest placed teams in La Liga are relegated to the Segunda. The top two teams from the Segunda are promoted to La Liga. Additional club is promoted after a series of play-offs including the third, fourth, fifth and sixth placed clubs.
