English Premier League History

The reason the Premier League was formed is due to the decline of English football in the late 1980’s. Most of the stadiums were in bad shape, facilities were awful, and hooliganism was at the highest level. As if that wasn’t enough, the Heysel Stadium disaster happened. Because of it, all English clubs were indefinitely banned from UEFA competitions. The Premier League odds and markets were at their lowest mark then. However, the ban eventually lasted just 5 years. Nevertheless, in 1989 another disaster struck. The Hillsborough disaster took the life of 96 people while 766 were injured. This was the lowest point of English football.

All of the above led to major changes in the league. Stadiums were getting improved and all safety standards were increased. This led to the return of English clubs in 1990. England even reached the semi-final of the 1990 World Cup. In that time, most English clubs started turning into business ventures. That’s how they increased popularity of Premier League odds and markets. However, the best teams in the First Division believed they could earn more if they break away. They made threats about leaving which increased their voting power. The money they were getting from sponsors and TV rights increased about tenfold by the end of 1990.

Foundation

Still, that wasn’t enough for the top sides. In 1990 the managing director of the London Weekend Television, Greg Dyke proposed a change. He met with representatives from the best 5 English clubs at that moment. They were Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Everton, and Tottenham. He suggested that a league featuring the best teams would generate more TV revenue. Two years later, the best teams collectively resigned from the First Division. On 27th of May 1992, the Premier League was formed. The first season started in 1992-1993 where the first Premier League odds and markets appeared.. In the inaugural season, 22 clubs featured in the English Premier League.

English Premier League Format

The Premier League has 20 teams competing in it. Each team is supposed to play against each other 2 times. Every team plays one match at their home stadium and the other one away. Winning a match gets teams 3 points, while a draw gives both sides just 1 point. The team with most points at the end of the season is crowned champions. The best Premier League odds and markets can be found when two of the strongest sides play against each other.

Teams are ranked by total points, then goal difference, and then goals scored. If still equal, teams are deemed to occupy the same position. If there is a tie for the championship, for relegation, or for qualification to other competitions, a play-off match at a neutral venue decides rank. As we mentioned above, the promotion and relegation system is connected to the EFL. The lowest placed 3 teams get relegated to the EFL while the 3 best teams from the EFL move to the EPL. Some of the best Premier League odds can be found in relegation battles.

The 4 top places in the Premier League qualify for the Champions League. The 5th place gets teams a Europa League spot while number 6 goes to Europa League qualifications. Another European spot is awarded to the winner of the FA Cup competition.

What if two or more teams have the same points at the end of the season?

Nevertheless, it is possible that at the end of the season two teams at the top have the same points. When that happens, the head-to-head record will decide the champion. That means, the trophy goes to the team that was better in both meetings between those sides during the season. If they are equal in that part as well, goal difference will be used to separate the teams. More goals scored trumps less conceded goals. Even though it’s rare but it can happen that two teams are equal in all the above parameters. If that happens, a game between those sides, played at a neutral location will decide the champion.

This is a bet type which can be used to improve on your favorite bet. It’s a bet best used when a top side is playing against the weakest teams. That way you can bet that the strong side will be leading on half time and also win at the end. Additionally, the EPL has a lot of tough matches since there are a lot of strong sides. That means a lot of matches would be a draw during half time. Betting X-1 or X-2 would be a great choice. Also, this way the Premier League odds will be higher. Last but not least, we also have to mention over/under betting when it comes to Premier League odds. This type of betting is probably the most popular one out there. A lot of the matches are very hard to predict, especially if you want to pick a winner. So instead of that, you can bet on how many goals will be scored. For instance, if you bet on over 2.5 goals and 3 goals are scored, you win your bet. It doesn’t matter at all who won the game as long as 3 goals were scored!
