The history of the National League

The league was formed as the Alliance Premier League in 1979, but first starts for the 1979–80 season. The league include clubs from the Northern Premier League and the Southern League. Since 2002–03, the National league has been granted a second promotion place, with a play-off deciding who joins the champions in League Two. Format of the National League

The National League consists 24 teams that all are playing each other home and away. Season runs from August to May and after 46 game rounds the winner is the team with most points. Winner get promotion to EFL League Two. After regular season there is Promotion Play off for the clubs finishing second to seventh in the standings.

For each match teams will receive 3 points for victory, 1 point for a draw and 0 (zero) points for losing. At the end of the season, the winner taking the title will be the team with most total points scored.

What if two or more teams have the same points at the end of the season?

If any clubs finish with the same number of points, their position in the league table is determined by goal difference, then the number of goals scored. If the teams still cannot be separated, they will be awarded the same position in the table.

Promotion and relegation

At the end of each season two clubs are promoted from National League to EFL League Two, while four teams are relegated. The two promotion teams are: league champions and the winner of the Playoff Promotion Final from home and away semi finals between those clubs finishing from 2 to 7 place in the table.

The four teams that have the position from 21 to 24 in the table after the season will be relegated. Their relegation is in either National League North or National League South, which are the sixth overall tier in England.
