Cons

Sometime in the 18th century, as the Dutch East Indian Company expanded its operations across the globe, a legend was born. It concerned a ship that could never return to port but was trapped in an eternal journey. In Dutch, the ship was De Vliegende Hollander; its English name is the Flying Dutchman. The ship is alleged to glow with a ghostly light and rumor labels it a portent of doom. According to the legend, crew members of the ship continue to try to send messages to their long-dead relatives on land. Flying Dutchman is a 2018 release that’s coming out of Amatic, one of the few slot machines released by this company in recent years. The legend of the ghost ship inspired this slot machine, but it’s not the only one to be based on it, as a popular film like Pirates of the Caribbean can attest to.

Welcome to Flying Dutchman
Welcome to Flying Dutchman

The Flying Dutchman doesn’t entirely make use of the spookier aspects of the Flying Dutchman myth; instead, a gentle sea laps in the background with the constant motion making you feel like you really are on a ship. Our captain is a dashingly handsome man – closer to what you would see in a film than a real-life crew member hundreds of years ago – whilst a beautiful lady can also be found aboard. Other thematically appropriate symbols include a seagull, a piece of pirate treasure and the moonlit ship, which gets some dramatic animation when it’s part of a winning line. The wild symbol is a bit more generic – represented by the word ‘wild’ – as are the sound effects. The game has 50 paylines, 5×4 reels and a mix of features that includes scatters, wilds, bonus spins and Supersize symbols. Its payouts goes up to $1,000 in value.

Flying Dutchman Gameplay

Before starting Flying Dutchman there are certain things you can do to set it up under your preferences. You can see the betting amount right below the reels. You can set it from 50 all the way up to 3000 coins per spin. However, the player can’t control the coin size in this tile. The slot has 50 paylines that can’t be controlled by the player. The number of lines is shown on the left side, right below the reels. With no button to control the paylines, it means that all 50 remain active throughout the whole gameplay. Keep in mind that this slot can be played with bitcoin. However, you can play with regular FIAT currency as well.

Hitting the button with the two rotating arrows will start the Flying Dutchman online slot. The button is on the bottom right side, right below the reels. Right next to it, you can see the Auto Play button which is used to spin the reels automatically. This is a feature often added to slots by game developers. Additionally, this slot title has a Max Bet button as well. Clicking on it allows the players to play the game at the maximum bet. The button to control the background sound is on the top-right side of the reels. Right next to it, there is an “?” button. Clicking on it will reveal the gameplay, paylines, and all the bonuses. Lastly, the game options are there as well. Players can find the settings button right below the sounds button.

Symbols

The unique theme of the game comes from a legend, that of a ghost ship that was called The Flying Dutchman. The story goes that the ship originated from 17th century, a time when the Dutch were a powerful nation on the world’s oceans. Apparently, seeing this ship was a bad sign. Amatic came up with a design that appears to show us the characters that meet the Flying Dutchman, with a young captain and a woman being present among the best symbols available. You add a Wild logo, the logo of the ship, a sapphire broach and a bird, and that’s about it for the interesting part of the list of symbols. There are several Royals on that list as well.

Moving on to the design, I think that the individual high-paying symbols are of very good quality, mostly. The broach could’ve done with more attention, and the playing cards are not interesting at all, but other than that I think that you can enjoy the game, particularly since there is nobody else telling this particular story in slot machine form.

Flying Dutchman Features and Bonuses

A decent number of games available right now, will feature a mechanic which has been implemented for the first time in a land-based slot, called Book of Ra. It’s been turned into an online version as well, but it has a lot of competition from games which have basically cloned its mechanics. Flying Dutchman is one of the many slots that have done this, and the features you’re going to see mentioned here are typical for releases in this category. It has to be said that the bonus features in Flying Dutchman are a little thin on the ground, although they are a little easier to find than in many slots. Below, we will cover the bonus features in proper detail.

Supersize Symbols

The base game has three possible supersize symbols: the captain, the lady and the ship. These can take up a 2×2 space and greatly increase your chance of filling a winning line. You can find supersize symbols on the middle three reels. The supersize symbols fall in the category of wilds. However, unlike the simple wild that only substitutes for symbols, these symbols help create huge wins. Amatic as a developer often add these types of features to their slots. You can read more about such features on their website.

Thrill Factor

Usually, slots have more than one feature, making the best one a Thrill Factor. However, in Flying Dutchman, there is only one bonus feature. There is a bonus symbol that triggers free spins. These free spins are the only extra feature that the slot offers. For that reason, we consider this feature to be the Thrill Factor of this slot.

Free Spins Feature

The Flying Dutchman, the ship that inspired the slot, is also designed as a logo, but it’s much cooler looking. This one will be used as a scatter feature, which means that you just need at least three symbols in any positions, not on a particular line. They trigger for you 15 bonus spins and they can also pay the largest rewards that the slot has to offer via five symbols. A huge advantage of this feature is that the middle three reels will host mega-sized wilds on them, so there is a big potential for impressive wins in it.

Flying Dutchman Free Spins Feature
Free Spins Feature

The game calls these huge symbols Supersize, and they include a wild, but also offer regular symbols in that version. However, that’s not all when it comes to the free spins. During the bonus round, additional spins can be won. In combination with the giant wilds, this round can lead to huge wins. As far as casino games go, this is one of the better features available out there.

Conclusion

This isn’t a bad slot but there isn’t really anything to set it apart from the crowd. The graphics are pleasant but seem to underutilize the theme – this could be any seafaring slot rather than specific to the Flying Dutchman. Rewards for Flying Dutchman are decent but not massive; however, the free spins and supersize symbols do add a little something to the game. What is more unusual – and irritating – is that there doesn’t seem to be an official RTP. Most slots give you an average return as a percentage of 100. Whether this is enough for you will depend on your personal taste, so it is certainly worth giving it a try. I think that you will find this fantastic title to be an enjoyable game, delivering not just a unique story but interesting features as well.
